About Earl
Earl was elected as the current OSSTF Treasurer at AMPA 2009, after serving as Vice President of the Toronto Teacher Bargaining Unit for four years and full time Executive Officer for five years.Born in rural Newfoundland and raised in a large, single income, working class family, Earl learned early in life about the importance of unions, and the importance of public education. At university, Earl stu
died Canadian Labour History. When he moved to Ontario in the early 1990's to begin his teaching career, after teaching in Japan for a year, Earl immediately became an active member of OSSTF.
Through the Social Contract and into the Harris/Eves years and beyond, Earl maintained a consistently active role in OSSTF, gaining the respect of OSSTF colleagues in Toronto. As a full time Executive Officer and as Vice President in Toronto, Earl proved to be an outspoken defender of public education, a skilled communicator, an activist with strong analytical, organizational and leadership skills, and an experienced financial manager.
Earl also served on the Executive of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council for two years, gaining the respect of activists in other labour and education unions. Earl's role as an OTF Governor and his involvement with the provincial Finance Committee, including serving as Committee Vice Chair in 2005, have extended that respect beyond the local to members of other Districts across the Province, OTF Governors, and OTF representatives of Affiliate Members.
As a member of the Provincial Executive team, Earl brings all of these skills and experiences to bear as he works to ensure that OSSTF's finances continue to meet our goals, and as he shares in the responsibility of decision making for our Union.
